ThorConIsle Barge Lengthwise Section View Showing 1 of 2 Nuclear Reactors (Blue) Driving a Single Electricity Generator.
3/4 of the world's mega-cities - the world's largest
electricity markets - are coastal, making it very difficult to get the main
electrical feeders into the centers of the cities.
Having spare same-power barges on hand make it very easy, quick, and cheap to
get a broken nuclear power plant back on-line.
Nuclear Electricity Barges can be mass-produced just like other mass-produced
ships - Cruse Ships, Oil Tankers, Banana Boats, Fishing Vessels, Container
Ships, etc.
ThorConIsle™ 500 megaWatt(e) nuclear barges
will usually come in pairs.

The Reactor End Is The End Away From Land.

A 5-Exchangable Reactor Fuel Ship Removing A Spent Reactor "Can" or Delivering A Fresh "Can".

Molten Salt Reactors are most likely to be the leading next generation of nuclear technology. Their thorium fuel and modular mass-producible economics are well-suited to replace both the existing coal and the current generation of marginally safe solid fuel Water Cooled Reactors.
Their energy density has been mentioned as being 20 to 50 times greater than solid fuel water cooled submarine reactors, the current record holder for modern nuclear reactors.
The 550°F operating temperature of conventional solid fuel-rod water cooled reactors means they have no chance of replacing the heat of fossil fuels beyond boiling water to power low-efficiency steam turbines. Molten salt (1,300°F salt) and pebble bed (1,800°F helium) reactors can equal or exceed the performance of coal (1,100°F steam).
ThorCon sites are two unit sites. Two unit nuclear sites produce better economics and reliability.
Other companies developing canister type molten salt reactors include Terrestrial Power's IMSR and several in both Europe and Asia.

Jim,
Thanks for featuring ThorCon on your web site.
The design keeps progressing and our own web site is hopelessly out of date.
Attached is a presentation which we gave to the Korean yards in November.
It too is already out of date. But feel free to use.
ThorCon Update -
Dec 2018 - do_djw1.pdf
I can send you the individual pdf's if you'd like.
You will probably be interested in the heat balance.
Despite the relatively pedestrian steam conditions, the over all net efficiency
is 46 to 47% depending on sea water temp, equivalent of a top of the line USC
plant.
The reason is less parasitic load in steam generation and we don't throw 10% of
the HHV up the stack.
By the way towing draft is not an issue.
The minimum even keel draft is about 6.5 m.
We will do most of the tow with a draft forward of 10 m and aft of 12 m. No
problem for the Canals or the building docks.
Merry Christmas,
Jack Devanney

Another molten salt reactor company, Terrestrial Energy of Canada, posted some very easy to understand schematic layouts illustrating what is possible with a a modern exchangeable reactor power plant.
Their motto: "If it isn't cheaper than coal, forget it".

- Dan Yurman
"ThorCon employs a moderately high energy density resulting in a
short (4 year) moderator life. A ThorCon plant is made up of one or more 250
MWe modules. Each module consists of two sealed Cans. Each Can houses a 250 MWe
primary loop including a Pot (reactor), pump, and primary heat exchanger (PHX).
The two Cans are duplexed. At any time, one Can is operating and the other is in
cool-down or stand-by mode. The plant is designed so that the change out of a
cooled-down Can is safe and quick."
ThorCon exec_summary.pdf (Written
by a person experienced in building supertankers. Please try to find the time to
read the Abstract. The entire summary will give you some idea of how backwards
today's nuclear reactors are and how the ThorCon was designed to be relatively
inexpensively mass-produced, not unlike an airplane or ship.)

How Thorium Works

It looks like the Chinese are going to clean up their coal plants first.
Using two small pebble beds. Perhaps 40 reactors driving 20 steam turbine electricity generators.

Safety
The experience of the MSRE is indeed applicable to building the safety case. The improved ThorCon design, based on the MSDR, has multiple barriers to radioactive material dispersion and multiple systems for decay heat removal. This permits testing without fear that a single mistake will lead to a radioactive release. We plan to argue that the EPZ is the plant site boundary. The 250 MWe scale of the power module makes such testing feasible. The design uses commercial materials known to be compatible with the molten salt environment. We plan on testing the prototype, first with no fissile materials, using electric heating to bring pressures and temperatures to operational levels. The regulator will be invited to participate to became familiar with the technology and ThorCon.
The finished prototype will be tested in Indonesia in a step-by-step commissioning process, with each step requiring approval of the test approval committee of international experts appointed by the regulator. The 250 MWe scale of the power module makes such testing feasible. After two years we expect to obtain a type license for future commercial power plants.
Today’s giant LWRs are licensed without testing.

Nuclear Waste: The Sub-Seabed
Solution
The radioactivity goes away with the nuclear barge.
The entire
world of nuclear energy has bungled the issue of nuclear waste. Here is a
better idea:
