Molten Salt Reactors are most likely to be the leading next generation of nuclear technology. Their thorium fuel and modular mass-producible economics are well-suited to replace both the existing coal and the current generation of marginally safe solid fuel Water Cooled Reactors.

Their energy density has been mentioned as being 20 to 50 times greater than solid fuel water cooled submarine reactors, the current record holder for modern nuclear reactors.

The 550°F operating temperature of solid fuel water cooled reactors means they have no chance of replacing the heat of fossil fuels beyond boiling water to power low-efficiency steam turbines. Molten salt (1,300°F salt) and pebble bed (1,800°F helium) reactors can equal or exceed the performance of coal (1,100°F steam).

Other companies developing canister type molten salt reactors include Terrestrial Power's IMSR and several in both Europe and Asia.

"ThorCon employs a moderately high energy density resulting in a short (4 year) moderator life. A ThorCon plant is made up  of one or more 250 MWe modules. Each module consists of two sealed Cans. Each Can houses a 250 MWe primary loop including a  Pot (reactor), pump, and primary heat exchanger (PHX). The two Cans are duplexed. At any time, one Can is operating and the other is in cool-down or stand-by mode.
